Bringing Sex-Positive Research to the Mic
Most people learn about Black sexuality through statistics, teen pregnancy rates, HIV risk, and STI prevalence. But that’s not the whole story.
My work uncovers the why behind those numbers, and more importantly, the systems and narratives that keep us disconnected from pleasure.
I speak on the four main barriers that limit Black women’s sexual pleasure:
Psychological:
Anxiety, trauma, sexual self-consciousness
Physical:
Genito-pelvic pain/penetration disorders
Sociocultural:
Superwoman schema, religious shame, cultural silence
Communication:
Barriers with partners and healthcare providers

It is always one of my deepest pleasures to collaborate with and receive knowledge from Dr. Shemeka Thorpe.
She is an innovative and award-winning researcher whose scholastic contributions fuel sex-positivity, wellness, and restoration. Further, she is a dynamic speaker whose words and presence demonstrate warmth, love, and a deep passion for her work.
